As a time-tested fan favorite, DNA’s Chocolope has long been one of the terpene superstars. Crafted from what was the real-deal Chocolate Thai cob bricks of the 70’s, Chocolope really has very, very few competitors. Alternative genetics that carry the same terpene palette are all but gone, with a few exceptions like DJ Short and his Cocoa Kush.
However, they all have a common feature: the resin production and potency profiles are lacking. Ambrosia needed to find that Chocolope dominant chemotype, rather than the Cannalope Haze side of Chocolope, which can sometimes show underwhelming potency. Eventually, they selected a killer chocolate Thai-dominant male (a year later) and re-worked the line back to a representative Chocolope BX female who made the grade. (This really took a lot more work than they expected.) Now they were ready to work the best Chocolope had to offer for their designs.
Ambrosia did extensive breeding work over the years with original T.H. Seeds classic, “MK Ultra”, selecting different females for different projects from a common F2 genepool they created. The F2 line was always dependable and never disappointed, often bringing new phenotypes they had yet to experience. About three years ago they came across a unique terpene they had never seen before (or heard of) – “Cherry Coconut”. As the name suggests, the terps are a dead ringer for a coconut colada with a cherry finish. Moreover, as luck would have it they found a male stud that brought the best qualities along for the ride!
Cherry Coconut turned out to be amazing breeding stock, lending a shorter flowering time and a unique and totally ridiculous, ‘cherry-coconut’ terpene profile. Most every pheno is highly resinous, as you would expect from a MK Ultra parental line, with a wide branching structure that trains itself, and shows high resistance to late season molds! Moreover, these traits pass over to the female pretty well, and the “Box of Chocolates” project was no exception.
The thought occurred to them to work their Chocolope BX back to their MK Ultra, Cherry Coconut” project. The idea was to forge that unique chocolate terpene profile into the mix, while capturing the heavy resin production and overall production of their worked line of MK Ultra, and still have a complex mix of unique terps. Getting these terps to shine through was the high bar and it took a few runs before they got a nice balance of phenos that displayed a bit of both parental lines. That variety of terps was the inspiration for the name, “Box of Chocolates” – you just never totally know what you are going to get!
