Deep Ellum Seed Co. considers NL#2 their favorite Northern Lights selection. While it may grow taller than the #1 or #5, they find it to be the most flavorful and sweetest of all the Northern Lights varieties they maintain.

NL#2 was created in 1985 by Nevil, who selected a choice Afghani line from America, crossed it with Jim Ortega’s Kush4, and then back-crossed to the Afghani. Nevil began offering NL#2 in 1988 and continued to refine the line. In 1991, when Sensi Seeds acquired his operation, the name was changed to Hindu Kush. Deep Ellum Seed Co. offers a unique version of NL#2, being the only currently available direct inbreeding of the Seed Bank of Holland’s 1988 original release.

The strain presents two distinct phenotypes: shorter Kush types and taller, open-structured Afghani types. While both are sweet and delicious, the taller types are known for their juicier and tastier qualities. NL#2 produces an assertive yet easy-going, playful effect and, like other Northern Lights varieties, is forgiving and easy for beginners to cultivate.

Over the decades, Deep Ellum Seed Co. has focused on inbreeding towards the taller Christmas tree phenotypes. However, for this current generation, they selected the most Kush4-looking male from their previous generation, made two years ago, and crossed it with their tall mother plant. This generation is expected to produce more Kush4 phenotypes compared to recent releases, bringing it closer to the 1989-1996 version.
